Fitness Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated: 5 Rules That Actually Work

Published on 3 June 2025 at 15:25

If you’re just starting your fitness journey, or starting over, it can be overwhelming. There’s so much noise: conflicting advice, 12-step programs, and routines that require hours you don’t have.

But the truth? Fitness doesn’t have to be complicated. You can get stronger, leaner, and feel better without flipping your life upside down.

Here are five simple rules that actually work:

  1. Move Your Body Every Day
This doesn’t mean you need to crush yourself with hour-long workouts. A walk counts. Ten minutes of bodyweight squats and pushups count. Movement is the foundation. Consistency beats intensity, especially at the start.
  2. Focus on Real Food
You don’t need to go keto, vegan, or track every gram. Start by eating more whole foods—lean proteins, fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, and complex carbs. Keep it simple: real food, not too much, mostly plants.
  3. Prioritize Protein and Strength
Protein helps you build and maintain muscle, keeps you full, and supports recovery. Combine that with strength training—bodyweight or resistance—and you’ll burn fat more effectively, even at rest.
  4. Sleep is Your Secret Weapon
If you're tired, you’ll crave sugar, skip workouts, and lose motivation. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep a night. Women: sometimes we need a little more or less sleep depending on our cycle. Listen to your body and be open to shifting your sleep schedule around based on how you feel. Think of sleep as part of your training, not separate from it.
  5. Stop Chasing Hacks. Do the Boring Stuff Well.
You don’t need a new trick. You need repetition. Drink water. Prep meals. Move daily. Get strong. Repeat. When you master the basics, everything gets easier.

Take action today by picking one of the above, and add it to your to-do list for the next week!
